Hello World
Hi, my name is David and I’m a Software Engineering Manager. Like a lot of engineering managers, I was pretty surprised when years and years of software engineering, design and consulting lead me to a place where I was now responsible not just for engineering, but coaching, listening, cheerleading, planning, organising and recruiting for a remote, globally distributed team.
For quite a few of those years as an engineer, I’ve wanted to start writing but never felt like I had anything interesting to say. After all, how many articles and tutorials have already been written about the idiosyncrasies of JavaScript, building microservices or, more recently, getting started with Chatbots and AI? But management feels very different. Much of the job depends on navigating individual situations, changing market conditions, attitutes to work and new techologies so sharing individual perspectives feels more valuable. If writing down my experiences helps just one person get to grips with becoming a manager, it will be worth it. Even if that person is myself.
